How to cook delicious baked tilapia fillets

It's super simple to cook delicious and flavourful tilapia fillets. For this recipe, all you have to do is preheat your oven to 425°F, place the fish on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, sprinkle with seasonings and bake uncovered in the oven for about 20 minutes! That's it!

Baking them in this way will allow the fish to become slightly crisp on the top while keeping the inside flaky and moist. Once the fish has finished cooking, drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil over the top along with some lemon juice, and you've got a delicious main for any meal!

What temperature should baked tilapia be cooked to?

You'll know when the tilapia is done cooking when the meat becomes white and flaky. When putting a thermometer into the thickest part of the fish, the temperature should be 145°F or above.

Is it better to bake fish covered or uncovered?

For this recipe and since the tilapia is cooked from frozen, it's best to cook it uncovered.

If you'd like to try cooking the tilapia inside a foil packet, you definitely can! This will change the texture of the fish a bit by making is less crisp on the outside, but it'll still be equally yummy.

Can you cook frozen tilapia without thawing?

Yes, you can cook frozen tilapia without thawing. For this recipe, frozen fillets are used. If you'd like to use fresh or thawed tilapia, it would be best to reduce the cooking time to 10-15 minutes.

Easy Oven Baked Tilapia Fillets

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 tilapia fillets, frozen
  • dill, to taste
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • juice of 1/2 lemon

*I'm quite liberal with the dill, salt and pepper!

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Line a metal baking sheet with parchment paper and set the tilapia fillets evenly on its surface.
  3. Sprinkle salt, pepper and dill on top of the fillets according to taste. I never measure the amounts and just go according to how we like it… I'm quite liberal with the seasonings, but you can add them how you like.
  4. Place the fish in the oven to bake for 20 minutes. When finished cooking, dribble a little extra virgin olive oil over the top. You can also squeeze a little fresh lemon juice over the top.
  5. Serve with rice, steamed veggies or any other of your favorite sides.

Notes

This recipe calls for frozen tilapia fillets but you can also use fresh if you'd like. As fresh fillets won't require as long to bake, please keep an eye on them as they cook. 10-15 minutes should be enough time to cook fresh fillets in the oven.
