What is Onion Soup Mix made of?
Store-bought onion soup mix contains similar ingredients to the homemade version, however, they contain a lot more preservatives.
This homemade version of the mix contains beef bullion, dehydrated onion flakes, onion powder, paprika, garlic, black pepper, salt, dried parsley, celery seed and some brown sugar.
How to Make Onion Soup Mix from Scratch
Combine all the dry soup mix ingredients in a mason jar or other air-tight container. Shake it up real good so everything is very well combined. Keep it on hand for when you want to add more oomph to your recipes!
How Long does it last and how to store it:
When stored in an air tight container, dry onion soup mix has a very long shelf life and should be good for 6-12 months.

Can I use onion powder instead of onion soup mix?
When recipes call for an onion soup mix, it's best not to substitute it with plain onion powder as by itself it will not be flavourful enough. The mix contains more ingredients including beef bullion which will give the mix more depth of flavour than plain onion powder.
Ways to Use Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix
In addition to using this as a replacement for Lipton Onion Soup Mix, there are so many ways to use it! Add some to any of the following for AWESOME flavour!
- Add to the meat mixture of burgers, ground beef, meatloaf, meatballs etc
- Sprinkle some on top of a roast before it goes into the oven
- Season pork chops, chicken breasts, etc before cooking
- Add to rice as its cooking to add more flavour
- Use to flavor chicken
- Use a sprinkle to flavor roast veggies, such as potatoes
- Use it as a base for homemade soup
- To flavour homemade dip
- In these recipes:
- 4- 5 tbsps of the mix is equal to about 1 store bought packet.
To Make Soup: Combine mix with 4-5 cups water and bring to a boil. Stir occasionally. Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered. Soup is ready once the mixture has reduced to your liking and onion flakes are rehydrated and soft. Makes about 3 ½ cups, depending on how long you reduce it for.
To Make Dip: Combine the mixture with 2 cups sour cream (equal to one 16oz container).
