Crispy Halifax donair egg rolls combine everything you love about a Halifax donair and an East Coast pizza shop appetizer in one crunchy bite. Filled with seasoned donair meat and served with sweet donair sauce for dipping, they're a fun twist on a Maritime comfort food classic.

There's something about East Coast food that just hits differently when you've grown up with it.

I grew up in New Brunswick, just a province away from Nova Scotia where the Halifax donair was born, so donairs have always felt like comfort food to me. Whether it was grabbing one from a local pizza shop or ordering one late at night with friends, they're one of those foods that instantly remind me of home.

Whenever I can find it, I like to pick up prepared donair meat from brands like Mr. Donair. It's not always easy to find depending on where you live, but it makes putting together donair-inspired recipes quick and easy. If you can't find it locally, don't worry. I also have a popular homemade Halifax donair recipe here on the blog that works perfectly for these egg rolls.

This time, instead of making a traditional donair, I decided to turn those familiar flavours into crispy donair egg rolls.

They're crunchy on the outside, packed with seasoned donair meat on the inside, and made even better with a generous side of sweet donair sauce for dipping. If you're from Atlantic Canada, there's a good chance you'll understand the appeal immediately. If you've never had a Halifax donair before, this is a fun and delicious way to experience one of Atlantic Canada's most iconic foods.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

These Halifax donair egg rolls take everything people love about a classic East Coast donair and turn it into a crispy, shareable appetizer. They're easy to make, packed with authentic donair flavour, and perfect for dipping in sweet donair sauce. Whether you're feeding a crowd or satisfying a craving for Maritime comfort food, these always disappear fast.

What Is This Halifax Donair Egg Roll Like?

Think of the flavours of a Halifax donair wrapped up in a crispy egg roll shell. The outside becomes golden brown and crunchy while the inside stays warm, savoury, and packed with seasoned donair meat.

They're rich and satisfying without being overly heavy, especially when served with sweet donair sauce for dipping. The combination of crispy wrapper, spiced meat, and sweet garlic sauce gives you all those familiar pizza shop flavours in a completely different form.

How to Make Halifax Donair Egg Rolls – Overview

You can find the full recipe details, including ingredient amounts and the full instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but first, here's a quick overview of how to make Halifax donair egg rolls!

To make these egg rolls, start by cooking and lightly browning the donair meat. Once it's cooled slightly, wrap the meat in egg roll wrappers, seal the edges with egg white, and shape them into classic restaurant-style egg rolls.

Brush the outside with canola oil, then cook until golden brown and crispy. I used my air fryer oven for the version shown in the photos, but they can also be deep fried.

Serve them hot with plenty of sweet donair sauce for dipping. It wouldn't be a true Halifax donair experience without it.

Recipe Variations & Substitutions

If you can't find prepared donair meat, homemade donair meat is the best substitute and will give you the most authentic Halifax donair flavour. I have a homemade Halifax donair recipe on the blog that works perfectly for these egg rolls.

The version shown in the photos was made using the air fryer method, but you can also deep fry the egg rolls if you prefer. In fact, the donair egg rolls served at many Maritime pizza shops are typically deep fried, which gives them an extra crispy exterior and a texture that's closer to the restaurant version.

If you'd like to make a smaller batch, simply cut the ingredients in half. These egg rolls are also a great way to use up leftover donair meat if you already have some prepared.

One thing I wouldn't recommend changing is the donair sauce. It's an essential part of the Halifax donair experience and what helps give these egg rolls their classic East Coast flavour.

Description

If you love Halifax donairs, you'll love these crispy Halifax Donair Egg Rolls. Filled with seasoned donair meat and served with sweet donair sauce for dipping, they're an easy appetizer inspired by the East Coast pizza shop classic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 kg Halifax donair meat (2.2 lbs) –
  • 24 egg roll wrappers (I used 1 package Wing's Egg Roll Wraps, 454 g)
  • 1 egg white
  • 23 tbsp canola oil, for brushing (air fryer method)
  • Donair sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cook the donair meat in a large frying pan over medium heat until heated through and lightly browned. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  2. Place an egg roll wrapper on a clean work surface. Add a portion of the donair meat to the center of the wrapper.
  3. Brush the edges of the wrapper with the egg white.
  4. Roll the wrapper tightly into a cylinder shape and flatten the ends to seal, creating the classic restaurant-style egg roll shape.
  5. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and donair meat.

Air Fryer Method

  1. Preheat your air fryer or air fryer oven to 400°F.
  2. Brush the outside of each egg roll lightly with canola oil.
  3. Arrange the egg rolls in a single layer, leaving space between them for airflow.
  4. Air fry for approximately 13 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until golden brown and crispy.

Deep Fry Method

  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F.
  2. Carefully place a few egg rolls into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the fryer.
  3. Fry for 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Transfer the egg rolls to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Notes

If you can't find prepared donair meat locally, you can make your own using my homemade Halifax Donair recipe.

Homemade donair sauce is highly recommended. It's an essential part of the Halifax donair experience and helps bring all the flavours together.

The egg rolls shown in the photos were made using the air fryer method, but they can also be deep fried until golden brown and crispy.

Leftover donair meat works well for this recipe if you already have some prepared.
