Description
If you love Halifax donairs, you’ll love these crispy Halifax Donair Egg Rolls. Filled with seasoned donair meat and served with sweet donair sauce for dipping, they’re an easy appetizer inspired by the East Coast pizza shop classic.
Ingredients
- 1 kg Halifax donair meat (2.2 lbs) –
- 24 egg roll wrappers (I used 1 package Wing’s Egg Roll Wraps, 454 g)
- 1 egg white
- 2–3 tbsp canola oil, for brushing (air fryer method)
- Donair sauce, for serving
Instructions
- Cook the donair meat in a large frying pan over medium heat until heated through and lightly browned. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- Place an egg roll wrapper on a clean work surface. Add a portion of the donair meat to the center of the wrapper.
- Brush the edges of the wrapper with the egg white.
- Roll the wrapper tightly into a cylinder shape and flatten the ends to seal, creating the classic restaurant-style egg roll shape.
- Repeat with the remaining wrappers and donair meat.
Air Fryer Method
- Preheat your air fryer or air fryer oven to 400°F.
- Brush the outside of each egg roll lightly with canola oil.
- Arrange the egg rolls in a single layer, leaving space between them for airflow.
- Air fry for approximately 13 minutes, flipping halfway through cooking, until golden brown and crispy.
Deep Fry Method
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F.
- Carefully place a few egg rolls into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the fryer.
- Fry for 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
- Transfer the egg rolls to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Notes
If you can’t find prepared donair meat locally, you can make your own using my homemade Halifax Donair recipe.
Homemade donair sauce is highly recommended. It’s an essential part of the Halifax donair experience and helps bring all the flavours together.
The egg rolls shown in the photos were made using the air fryer method, but they can also be deep fried until golden brown and crispy.
Leftover donair meat works well for this recipe if you already have some prepared.
