Where does Hummus come from/originate?
Hummus is a delicious Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dish that has become popular all over the world. It is typically made from mashed chickpeas, tahini, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice. However, there are many variations of hummus, and roasted red pepper hummus is one of my favorites!
This dish is believed to have originated in Egypt, and it is thought that the word “hummus” comes from the Arabic word for “chickpeas”. Chickpeas have been cultivated in the Middle East for thousands of years, so it's no surprise that they are a key ingredient in this traditional dish.
Is red pepper hummus good for you?
Yes! Roasted red pepper hummus is a great source of dietary fiber, protein, healthy fats, and vitamin c. It's also low in calories and can help you reach your daily nutrient goals. The high levels of dietary fiber in roasted red pepper hummus will help you feel full and satisfied after eating despite consuming fewer calories in total than you would from a meal less rich in fiber, thus making it an excellent diet food.
Red pepper hummus is also a good source of protein, which is essential for building and repairing muscles. Additionally, roasted red pepper hummus is low in calories and can help you reach your daily nutrient goals.
What ingredients are used to make roasted red pepper hummus?
This recipe for roasted red pepper hummus is made from a combination of canned chickpeas, garlic, roasted red bell peppers, lemon juice, tahini (made from sesame seeds), salt, and some extra virgin olive oil. It's a delicious, healthy, and easy to make dip or spread that's perfect for parties, potlucks, or anytime you're entertaining.

How to make Roasted Red Pepper Hummus – Overview
You can find the full recipe details, including ingredient amounts and the full instructions, at the bottom of this post, but first, here's a quick overview of how to make homemade roasted red pepper hummus!
In a food processor, combine all ingredients (chick peas, garlic cloves, tahini, lemon juice, salt, and roasted bell peppers) except for the olive oil. Pulse until the components begin to combine.
If necessary, open the food processor and push down the contents of the container with a spatula to help everything blend together. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil while pulsing/processing until you reach your desired consistency using the small opening on top of the food processor.
The best hummus has a smooth, creamy texture, so keep adding oil until you feel it's just right!

Can I use my own homemade roasted peppers instead of jarred roasted red peppers?
* How to Roast Red Peppers
Yes, you can most definitely use your own homemade roasted red peppers in this recipe! If you have the time and patience to roast your own peppers, then by all means, go for it. The roasted red pepper hummus will have a deeper, more robust flavor as a result.
You can easily make your own roasted red peppers by charring them on a gas stovetop or under the broiler in the oven. When making roasted red peppers in the oven, I like to cut them into quarters, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle them with fresh garlic.
If using the stove top method, simply place the peppers on an open flame, using tongs to rotate them occasionally, until the skin is blackened and blistered all over. Allow the peppers to cool, then remove the skins, seeds, and stems.
Using jarred peppers is a great time saver though, so go ahead and use them if you like!

Recipe Variations
Raw vs. Roasted Garlic: I used raw fresh garlic in this recipe, but for a different depth of flavor, you could try using roasted garlic in this recipe.
Lemon Juice: You could also use lime juice in this recipe. I think lemon juice brightens the flavor of the hummus a bit more, but either way would be delicious.
Spices: I kept the spice level low in this recipe, but feel free to add chili powder, smoked paprika, or cumin! Adjust seasoning according to your tastes!
Garnish: For this recipe, I garnished the roasted hummus with some chopped roasted peppers and some sesame seeds, but you could also use toasted pine nuts, some chopped cilantro, or anything else you like.

What can I add to my hummus to make it taste better?
There are a few things you can do to make your hummus taste even better. One is to add more spices to it, such as cumin. Another is to use fresh ingredients instead of canned or jarred ones.
You can also add different types of roasted vegetables or fruits to the mix, such as eggplant, zucchini, or even roasted tomatoes. Just be sure to add them in small batches so you can get the perfect flavor combination. By adding these simple ingredients, you can really take your hummus to the next level.
Another way to add even more flavor to your own hummus is to add some feta cheese! I like to add about 1/4 cup of feta, but you can add more or less to taste. Just crumble it up and mix it in with the rest of the ingredients. You could also add in some chopped olives or even sun-dried tomatoes.

Instead of canned chickpeas, can I use dried chickpeas?
Yes, you can use dried chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) instead of canned in this recipe. Just make sure to soak them overnight first. Take the soaked chickpeas and cook them in boiling water for about an hour or until they are soft. Before proceeding to the rest of the recipe, make sure to cool and drain your cooked chickpeas.
Can Lemon juice be substituted for something else in this recipe?
Lemon juice is a key ingredient in this recipe, so I wouldn't recommend substituting it for anything else. However, if you're in a pinch, you could try using white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Just start with a smaller amount and add more to taste.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: about 2 cups 1x
Ingredients
- 28 oz canned chick peas, drained and rinced
- Juice of one lemon – have more on hand, I usually add a bit more as I taste test!
- ¼ cup tahini
- 3 cloves garlic – can use more, according to taste, if you like!
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp cumin – optional but very nice in this recipe
- 1 cup roasted red peppers, jarred and packed in oil
OR fresh homemade roasted red peppers – see my notes at the bottom of the recipe card - ¼ – ½ cup extra virgin olive oil (adjust the amount depending on what kind of texture you'd prefer, use more to make it smoother)
- chopped roasted red peppers, for garnish
- sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- Into a food processor add all ingredients except for the olive oil.
- Pulse the ingredients until they start to combine. If you need to, open the processor and push the contents of the container down with a spatula so everything combines.
- With the cover replaced and through the small opening on the top of the processor, slowly pour in the olive oil while pulsing/processing until you reach the desired consistency. The best texture for hummus is smooth and creamy.
Notes
You can easily make your own roasted red peppers by charring them on a gas stovetop or under the broiler in the oven. When making roasted red peppers in the oven, I like to cut them into quarters, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle them with fresh garlic.
If using the stove top method, simply place the peppers on an open flame, using tongs to rotate them occasionally, until the skin is blackened and blistered all over. Allow the peppers to cool, then remove the skins, seeds, and stems.
Please keep in mind that if your jarred roasted red peppers have a lot of oil in them from the packaging you may not need to use as much olive oil in the recipe. If you use roasted red peppers that have NOT been packed in oil, you'll need to use extra olive oil. Feel free to adjust the amounts of olive oil or even red peppers to best suit your taste. The more oil you use the smoother the texture. 😀
