This brown sugar garlic baked chicken is juicy, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make. Coated in a sweet and savory garlic glaze and finished with a caramelized top, it’s a simple oven-baked chicken recipe that’s perfect for busy weeknights.

This is one of those dinners I make when I want something easy but still really good. It comes together super fast, but the flavor makes it feel like way more effort than it actually is.

The chicken turned out really juicy and tender, and I made sure to spoon all those garlicky brown sugar drippings over top before serving. I had it with my sun-dried tomato parmesan orzo, and honestly, everything soaked up that sauce so well.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

It’s quick, simple, and uses basic ingredients you probably already have on hand. The brown sugar and garlic create a rich, slightly caramelized glaze while the chicken stays juicy and tender. It’s the kind of easy dinner that works just as well for a weeknight as it does when you want something a little more satisfying.

What Is This Brown Sugar Garlic Baked Chicken Like?

This chicken comes out really juicy and tender, with a sweet and savory brown sugar garlic coating that lightly caramelizes on top. As it bakes, it creates a flavorful layer of pan drippings that you can spoon over the chicken when serving.

It’s not a heavy sauce, but there’s definitely enough to drizzle over the chicken and even over your sides—especially something like orzo, which soaks it up really well.

How to Make Brown Sugar Garlic Baked Chicken Breast – Overview

You can find the full recipe details, including ingredient amounts and the full instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but first, here's a quick overview of how to make Brown Sugar Garlic Baked Chicken Breast!

You’ll start by placing the chicken breasts in a baking dish with a bit of space between them so they roast properly. Then, mix together the brown sugar, garlic, oil, Dijon, and seasonings to create a simple glaze.

Spread the mixture over the chicken and bake until it’s cooked through and juicy. At the end, a quick broil helps caramelize the top, while the pan drippings create a flavorful sauce you can spoon over everything when serving.

Recipe Variations & Substitutions

This recipe is meant to be simple and straightforward, but there are a few easy ways to adjust it depending on what you have on hand.

You can use chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts if you prefer—just keep in mind they may need a slightly longer cook time, but they turn out extra juicy.

Melted butter works well in place of olive oil if you want a richer flavor, and garlic powder can be used instead of fresh garlic for convenience. If you like a bit of heat, adding chili flakes gives a nice contrast to the sweetness without overpowering the dish.

That said, the base version is already really balanced, so it’s one of those recipes that doesn’t need much tweaking to work well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use fresh garlic?
No, garlic powder works just fine here. Fresh garlic gives a bit more punch, but both turn out really good.

How do I know when the chicken is done?
The safest way is to check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). The juices should also run clear when cut.

Can I skip the broiling step?
You can, but it’s worth doing if you have the time. It helps caramelize the top and gives the chicken that slightly sticky finish.

Storage, Reheating & Freezing

Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. Keep the chicken with the pan drippings so it stays moist.

Reheating
Reheat in the microwave in short intervals, spooning some of the drippings over top to keep it from drying out. You can also warm it in the oven at a low temperature, covered, until heated through.

Freezing
Freeze the cooked chicken in an airtight container for up to 2 to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat with the juices for best results.

What Can I Serve This With?

This chicken goes really well with anything that can soak up the extra sauce, so it’s easy to build a full meal around it.

My go-to is sun-dried tomato parmesan orzo—the pan drippings mix right in and add so much extra flavor. It’s also great with simple sides like rice, mashed potatoes, or even roasted vegetables.

If you want to keep things lighter, a fresh green salad on the side works well to balance out the sweetness of the chicken.

Description

Juicy baked chicken breasts coated in a sweet and savory brown sugar garlic glaze with a caramelized finish. This easy oven-baked chicken is packed with flavor and perfect for a simple weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp olive oil (or melted butter)
  • 56 cloves garlic, minced (or ~2 tsp garlic powder)
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Optional

  • ½ tsp chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Pat chicken breasts dry and place in a baking dish, leaving space between them.
  3. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, olive oil (or butter), garlic, paprika, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly over the chicken breasts.
  5. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  6. Broil for 2–3 minutes at the end to caramelize the top.
  7. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Don’t overcrowd the pan—this helps it roast instead of steam.

The broil step gives the best caramelized coating.

Pairs perfectly with creamy orzo or sun-dried tomato orzo.
