One of my earliest memories as a child is of picking fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and other veggies with my grandparents on their farm back on the East Coast where I grew up. I remember just how much fun it was to run up and down the rows of the garden over and over again – that was a lot of fun but what I enjoyed most was that I got to try some of the very first veggies harvested straight from the garden.
I believe that seeing and know exactly where those crunchy crisp cucumbers and juicy tomatoes came from when I was a child is one of the reasons why I have such a passion for writing about food here on Dishes and Dust Bunnies. Now as a mom who lives in Ontario, I do my very best to choose fresh locally grown vegetables and ingredients.

Choosing locally grown ingredients is important because it not only benefits local economic activity by supporting local jobs and farmers, it also helps the environment by reducing emissions from transporting the food. Choosing local is an important part of being environmentally responsible which contributes to sustainable agriculture.
In other words, your food won’t have to travel as far to reach you, so you get them as fresh as possible!

Buying local reminds me of all the hard work my grandparents did as they grew and harvested the veggies from their farm. Now as a mom, I feel it’s important to pass on this appreciation on to my son and future children. It’s important to me to choose locally grown ingredients to help support the local farmers here in Ontario – hard working people just like my grandparents.
As environmental responsibility and support for local farmers has grown, there has been an increasing number of businesses and restaurants who are stepping up to do their part.
