Homemade Chunky Guacamole
Homemade guacamole makes for an awesome party food to go with crunchy tortilla chips!
Of the versions of guac that I've tried, I've found that I prefer a chunky version with lots of large pieces of avocados with hefty chunks of tomatoes. Once I started making my guacamole like this I've never looked back!

I realize that there are a lot of smooth guacamole lovers out there, but I much prefer the texture of a little chunkiness. I just find that the texture of a chunky guacamole is much more satisfying.
In addition to the traditional ingredients, I like to add a little cumin and coriander powder. This just gives it a little boost and makes the yummyness factor shoot to the moon!
Guacamole is such a simple and delicious dip! It's super healthy, fresh and awesomely tasty!

Guacamole Tips!
1. When I have plans for a get together, I like to get all my ingredients ready ahead of time and into the mixing bowl – except for the avocados and lime juice. Once guests arrive, I combine the avocados and lime with the rest of the ingredients in the mixing bowl.
I find that this helps make sure that the dip is super fresh and doesn't turn brown too quickly.
2. In the rare event that you have any left-over guacamole and you need to store it for later:
Put the left-over guacamole in an air tight container. Before sealing the lid, press some plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole's surface. Every exposed surface of the guacamole should be covered and touching the plastic wrap. This will help prevent the guacamole from browning as quickly so you can use the rest the following day.

Homemade Chunky Guacamole
- Yield: Makes about 6 cups of guacamole 1x
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced and chopped
- 2 1/2 cups tomatoes, seeded and chopped into large chunks
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 tsp ground coriander
- 1/4 tsp ground cumin
- 3 large avocados, chopped into BIG chunks.
- Juice of 1 lime
Instructions
- First, in a large bowl combine everything except for the avocados and lime.
- Next drop the avocados on top of everything in the mixing bowl and sprinkle them with the lime juice.
- Using a large spoon, GENTLY push the avocado chunks around so they start to cover the over ingredients in the bowl.
- Use your best judgement on when to stop combining the avocados. If you stir too much, you won't have chunks anymore!
- Serve with tortilla chips or with your favourite Mexican food.

I only started liking avocados a few months ago. I make guac by squeezing some lime juice on an avocado, throwing in a little cilantro, and smoothing it together. I don’t make it smooth, but it isn’t chunky either. I can’t wait to try your recipe!
Yup, I’m the same way, I love big chunks of whatever I’m eating. We’ve been doing lots of avocado stuff lately, it’s such a great fruit.
This looks so good. I love homemade guacamole but I never make it as chunky as this one. Off to try it
I’m printing this off right now. My husband loves guacamole! I know what we are making this weekend!
There is seriously nothing better than home mad guacamole!! I make it all the time in the summer! Best snack ever!
I always make my own guac and salsa. It tastes SO much better that way. Extra cilantro for me too.
I love Guac! This recipe sounds fab! My daughter’s birthday is coming up, will have to make this for the party.
It seems so light and tasty. That is definitely something I would like to create too.
I have no doubt that is delish! I love avocado and I like them chopped into big chunks too. Are they out of season though? I’ve not been seeing much at the grocery store.
I still see them quite a lot in the grocery stores here so I think they’re still in season. I know there are a few varieties available year round as well. 🙂
I love guacamole. It’s like my favorite healthy snack of all time, on some celery, is awesome. I’ll have to try your recipe.
I am so hungry just reading this post. This looks absolutely divine. I am going to have to make this for my husband soon. Thanks for sharing.
This dish looks amazing. Not a fan of guacamole but your pictures make me wanna try it again.
This looks amazing. I am a huge guac fan! I eat it at least once a week. I am saving this recipe because I have to try it.
Have you seen those t-shirts where it says “I know guac is extra”? That’s pretty much sums up me. I love guac. I want it right now! Lol. Wouldn’t be TOO bad of a meal for supper, would it? 😉
I love chunky guac also. It does seem more satisfying than the really smooth ones. Your looks amazing by the way!
This sounds so good right now. I love using this kind of guac on top of tacos for extra texture.
Yum! Looks really good. Never had chunky guac! I bet my hubby would love it.
I love my guacamole chunky like this! it tastes so much better! That old, runny store bought stuff just does not compare to the homemade kind!
I am so in love with guacamole, especially when it’s chunky like this! I would love to make this recipe and have it in a nice taco.
Guacamole is a staple for summer time 🙂 My grandma likes to make it chunky (a little bit less chunky than your version, though). I prefer to make it a little bit smoother so that it’s easier to pick up on chips 🙂 I’ve never thought to add spices to my guac, I’m curious to try it out!
I always like my guacamole chunky, too. I”m not crazy about the smooth kind. When we visit my favorite Mexican restaurant we always order the fresh guac that they make tableside. It’s so chunky. Looking forward to trying your recipe.
These photos of the guac look like I could eat them through the computer! I really love your recipes! Very easy to follow!
Sounds great! I’ve never made guac myself but my husband and kids love it so I plan to mal eat a few times this summer! This sounds like a good one!
Oh yum! You should have called it super chunky. I can’t wait to make this.
I love a good guacamole! I have always had the smooth version. I do love texture to my food, definitely going to give this one a try!
I’m usually not a fan of guacamole, but that looks good! I love the texture.
The guacamole looks so good. I love chunky salsa so I definitely need to try guacamole. I love avocados so I cannot wait to pick some up and try this for Memorial Day weekend! Perfect for BBQ’s!
What a coinicidence! I am just waiting on my own avocados to arrive so that I can make some guacamole for dinner this evening! Your recipe sounds delicious, I’ll let you know how it goes!
I love guacamole! My kids hate it so I never make it. This looks easy and yummy, so I’m going to have to make it just for me! Thanks for the recipe!
Last night a friend and I were discussing how much we liked guacamole. I said I wish I had a good recipe for it… Walla!! the recipe appears on your blog. Thank You!
We make homemade guac all the time. Our recipe is a bit different, though. Guac and chips is one of our favorite snacks.
