How to Make Butter Chicken Meatballs – Overview

You can find the full recipe details, including ingredient amounts and the full instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but first, here's a quick overview of how to make butter chicken meatballs!

These chicken meatballs are baked until tender and juicy, then finished in rich butter chicken sauce either on the stovetop or in the oven. Using store-bought sauce keeps the recipe simple and approachable, but homemade sauce works well too if you have extra time.

The meatballs themselves are lightly seasoned with garlic, ginger, and warm spices so they pair perfectly with the creamy tomato-based sauce. Serve everything over basmati rice with naan for an easy and comforting dinner.

Recipe Variations & Substitutions

You can use homemade butter chicken sauce instead of store-bought if you prefer making everything from scratch or already have some prepared ahead of time. Ground turkey also works well in place of ground chicken and gives a very similar texture.

If you like a little more heat, try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the meatball mixture or sauce. These meatballs are delicious served with basmati rice and naan, but they also pair nicely with roasted vegetables or even mashed potatoes for a cozy twist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use store-bought butter chicken sauce?

Yes! Store-bought sauce works great in this recipe and keeps dinner quick and easy for busy nights. You can also use homemade butter chicken sauce if you prefer.

Can I make the meatballs ahead of time?

Yes, the meatballs can be baked ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to warm them in the sauce before serving.

Do I have to finish the meatballs in the oven?

No. You can either simmer the meatballs in the sauce on the stovetop or finish them in the oven depending on what’s easiest for you.

Are these butter chicken meatballs spicy?

They have warm flavor from the spices, but they aren’t overly spicy. If you want more heat, you can add cayenne pepper or chili flakes.

Storage, Reheating & Freezing

Store leftover butter chicken meatballs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavors actually get even better after sitting in the sauce for a bit.

To reheat, warm the meatballs and sauce gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat or bake in a covered dish at 325°F until heated through.

These meatballs also freeze well. Let them cool completely, then store them in a freezer-safe container with the sauce for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

What Can I Serve with Butter Chicken Meatballs?

Butter chicken meatballs are delicious served over fluffy basmati rice, which helps soak up all of the rich, creamy sauce. Warm naan is another great addition and makes it easy to scoop up every last bit from your plate.

For a complete meal, pair them with vegetable samosas, roasted cauliflower, garlic green beans, or a simple cucumber salad. If you're serving guests, adding a few Indian-inspired sides can turn this easy dinner into a meal that feels a little more special without adding much extra work.
