Confession: I’m a former teenage gothic metalhead – now I’m a country fan
For “Throw Back Thursday” I present to you…
*cue music*
Long long ago in a galaxy far far away (well actually just in rural New Brunswick, Canada)…
Me circa 2002…
This is how I liked to dress back in high-school and yes this was one of my actual school photos. My interests back then included listening to metal and goth music (which I DO still enjoy to a degree) but my tastes in music have expanded over time into country music and anything really. I'll put it this way – I don't mind an afternoon of Conway Twitty or Waylon Jennings blaring from my speakers.
I absolutely love this picture and it reminds me of days gone by. I really wasn't too much of a rebellious teen – just maybe a little mouthy at times. ugh… I'm so sorry mama and daddy!
For me, this is a reminder that through time we go through many changes in life (some of you probably not like in the picture though!). Since high school I've done so much – directed plays and acted back in my university theatre days, worked some difficult office jobs, have gotten married and now I have a wonderful little boy. Looking forward to whatever is next!

YES! Though my metal days in rural Minnesota were more in the early Slipknot years circa 97-2000, I am a true hippy now and love dearly folk and bluegrass music! Although I have a deep-seeded and irrational hatred for Conway Twitty that stems from childhood, Patsy Cline and Mason Jennings (a MN boy!) are always on my playlist. My mom helped me dye my hair pink the first time in 8th grade, and let my wear my boyfriend’s Manson shirt, but I wasn’t allowed any tattoos or black nail polish. Her exact words, “get anything you want pierced as many times as you want, but don’t you dare come home with a tattoo!” And I also have a school photo, perfectly poised and nice looking, but with hot pink hair and bracelets up to my elbows! 🙂 Amazing how we’re all so different yet all so similar, and indeed the life stages we move through are life-changing- thanks for the post!!! I’ll have to try to dig out a picture and post it… it’s eerily similar, though even now I’m a tad jealous of your mohawk!
HI Nikki!
Sounds like we’ve got a lot in common for sure!
That’s so great that your mom was accepting of your style – it’s great when parents and teens can compromise on things like that! It’s just not worth it to have fights over things like hair color and the color of cloths a kid wears – nothing’s permanent and tastes adapt, change, and evolve. 🙂
Speaking of Slipknot though – my husband and I went to see their show here in Toronto back in November! They performed with Korn which was another one of my teenage obsessions! It was neat that at the show there were a lot of “older” fans and not just kids. We couldn’t pass up the chance to see them perform since it was something I always wanted to do since I was a kid! One thing crossed off my bucket list! It was so much fun!
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! Nice to connect with you! 🙂

I absolutely love this picture! How long did it take to grow out the “mohawk”?
This made my day! Thank you for sharing!
Aww thanks!!
I can’t really remember how long it took to grow it back out but I do remember meticulously spiking and trimming it every day for about a year or two!
I wasn’t allowed to have a real mohawk back then so this was my compromise. lol
Glad this made your day! 🙂
