Isn't it nice that some grocery stores seem to carry every product under the sun, just for our convenience?
Well, you might want to reconsider purchasing some of these items from the grocery store if you're hoping to save money on your shopping trip. Unfortunately, we often pay a high price for convenience!
In today's post, I share with you the things that you should definitely consider NOT buying at the grocery store, especially if you want to save those hard earned dollars of yours! 🙂
Keep in mind that there are always exceptions to the rules. Sometimes you might get lucky and find one of the items listed below at lower cost in the grocery store, but in my experience this is very rare. It's best to always keep your eyes peeled and watch out for those good deals – but only make the purchase if it actually is a good deal and you need it!
6 Things Not to Buy at the Grocery Store
Cookware and Kitchen Utensils – These are almost always a much higher price at the grocery store. It's best to stick to department stores for these kinds of purchases.
Cosmetics, toiletries and other personal care items – Sneaky sneaky grocery store… I know what you're up to! Â You put all those lovely lipsticks and eyeliners in my field of view because you know it's my weakness! lol
Seriously though, these items are always waaaaaay overpriced in grocery stores. They know that it's more convenient for a tired out mom to grab a little something for herself while taking care of the groceries. These products are not offered at the grocery store for your convenience, they're there to reel you in and spend more while you're there!
Small Appliances – It may be tempting to purchase, especially if a product is “marked down” but most of the time these items are much more expensive than if you bought them from a typical department store. Even appliances that are discounted will often still be more expensive than if you bought it elsewhere at the “regular price”.
Party Supplies and greeting cards – Grocery stores will often have a selection of greeting cards and party supplies on hand for those last minute birthday party shoppers. It's important to note that the selection of cards will be quite limited, making it sometimes difficult to choose one that's exactly right for the occasion. You're likely going to end up settling for a card that's “just good enough” and pay a much higher price.
Other party supplies such as balloons, banner, streamers, etc are cheaper and the same quality at the dollar store, so try there first! 🙂
Batteries, light bulbs and extension cords – Again, this is another way that grocery stores take advantage of last minute shoppers. You can find these for much cheaper in department or hardware stores, so it's best to stock up so you won't have to buy them when you're in a hurry at the grocery store.
Spices – Before you buy spices from the grocery store pay close attention to how much is actually in the package. Glass jars of spices really don't hold that much and I've seen them cost as much as $8! If you look in the same aisle, you may even find the same spice but in a different package and larger quantity for much much less – sometimes even as low as $1! Â Whenever possible, try to buy your spices from bulk food stores or if they have one, in the bulk section at the grocery store!
Can you think of anything else that we shouldn't buy in the grocery store?
