I wanted a wreath for my door for this Halloween but I also didn't want to spend the money on something from a department store so I came up with a very simple way to create one using items I already had in the house! It costs practically nothing and takes only 3 easy steps to make!
In this post I'll show you how to make a simple base to make your own inexpensive DIY wreath base. For tomorrow's post I'll show you how I decorated this base for my Halloween wreath! It turned out so awesome and I can't wait to show you!
This is such an awesomely easy project that can be adapted to any seasonal wreath. You can use this base for Halloween, Christmas and really any other holiday you'd like.
Here's what you'll need:
- 1 or 2 black garbage bags, depending on how large of a wreath you want to make
- a whole bunch of plastic shopping bags
- some adhesive tape. Any tape will work but you might want to use a wide black duct tape to be most effective.
Here's what you do:

Step 1:
Lay out the garbage bag and stuff it with the plastic shopping bags so that they are pushed to one side.

Step 2:
Roll up the garbage bag and push out some of the air.[/ezcol_1third_end][ezcol_2third]
[/ezcol_2third] [ezcol_1third_end]
Step 3:
Using the tape connect the ends of the stuffed garbage bag. Also place tape around various sections of the base to create a circular shape.
[/ezcol_1third_end]Once you have finished taping around the wreath base it should look something like the picture below. Don't worry about the messiness of the look where the tape is attached – this will be covered with fabric or some other material when you decorate your wreath.
A few Notes to consider:
- Try to avoid stuffing the garbage bag too full with the plastic shopping bags. It's important that the wreath is not too heavy to hang.
- In the images above we used 2 garbage bags and attached them together. You may only need one garbage bag if it's big enough for the project you are doing.
- If you're making this wreath base for a specific holiday like Christmas consider using white garbage bags rather than the black I used here.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
Stay tuned for tomorrow's post where I show you how I decorated this base! 🙂
If you try out this project please share a picture of your decorated base on my Facebook page or tweet me a picture! I'd love to see what you come up with!
