I was very hopeful about the Safety 1st Oven Door Lock as I have read good things about it. It's been reported as sturdy, strong, and that it's easy to use. I installed this lock on my oven about one week ago and it seemed to be working very well until unfortunately yesterday it fell right off the spot where it had been placed. 🙁
The instructions were followed to a tee when this was placed onto my oven door. I made sure that the installation point was clean and clear of any grease or dirt to allow a proper bond and the product seemed to hold up quite well… until it fell off. Upon closer inspection I found the issue was due to the shape of the spot above the oven door not being completely flat. The adhesive strip didn't have a perfectly flat spot to stick to and this was absolutely the reason the lock fell off. I also was unable to put this in another location on the oven itself to allow better adhesion – so in the end my poor review is the ovens fault NOT the product itself. It seems that I was one of the unlucky few to fall just shy of the “Fits Most Ovens” category.
From what I can tell this would be an excellent product if it were not for the shape of my oven. I recall reading in a few of the reviews that a downside was that they were unable to remove the product to re-install elsewhere – so it doesn't sound like “lack of stickiness” is a typical issue. While it was installed I was pleased with it's heat resistance as well as it's ability to keep my boy out of the oven.
So in short before purchasing this, just make sure that the spot you plan on installing it is completely flat (it's the spot right above the door – like in the picture below).
Too bad my oven is the bad guy in all this! I guess I have to search for a different way to keep this oven closed up tight!
