You might be familiar with the epic battles I’ve had with my son during diaper changes. Getting this guy to brush his teeth has been only sightly less exhausting than the diaper “wrestling”. If you’re also a parent you may have experienced this whole running around screaming game of tag thing when trying to get your kid to brush their teeth – I certainly have.
In my desperation I’ve tried to come up with some ways to make brushing my son’s teeth more tolerable and possibly even exciting for him – I wasn’t even sure if that was possible. I asked my sister (she’s a dental hygienist and deals with kids quite often) what she thought about all this since I’m obviously concerned about the quality of brushing that happens during all the hub bub. In order for the brushing to be thorough enough to get all the right spots brushing should take about 2 minutes total – this seemed like a near impossible amount of time to commit to with my son trying to be a little Houdini.
So how do you get a toddler to brush their teeth?
My sister suggested I play a particular video and song on YouTube for him while his teeth are being brushed. The song happens to be just about 2 minutes and he’s completely obsessed with it.
I gave it a shot and now almost religiously my little boy is sitting still and completely calm to brush his teeth for and entire 2 minutes! It seems too good to be true and is nothing short of a miracle after what we were battling before.
If you’re having difficulties getting your child to stay still long enough to brush their teeth try finding a special song or video they love and play it while brushing their teeth. One of the great things about doing this is it gives the child a way to measure the time that it takes to complete the brushing. Rather than the child feeling like it’s going to take forever they know they’ll be finished once the song/video is done! If you don’t want to play a video or a song and are avoiding “screen-time” like many parents are doing these days you could also try just singing a special song to your child that’s about 2 minutes long – it just may have the same effect. 🙂
My son now looks forward to brushing his teeth since the song is special and he only gets to hear it while brushing his teeth. Now he asks to brush his teeth so he can hear the song! If you’ve been going through something similar try this out!
If you’ve had a similar struggle when trying to get your toddler to brush their teeth and found something that’s worked for your family I’d love to hear about it!
